Not long before Christmas I picked up a small ironing board at a garage sale for the grand total of $1, it was the perfect size for bringing into the kitchen and ironing on the worktop whilst I watch the kids (Or more truthfully, for when I’ve piled fabric on top of the full size ironing board in my sewing room and I’m forced to start moving stuff into the rest of the house to have space to actually create, [...]

Kid friendly ice pack tutorial

With two boys in the house we have A LOT of bumps and bruises. A couple of weeks ago my eldest son took an impressive fall in our hallway and ended up bumping his lip pretty badly. The first thing he asked for (learned from preschool) was an icepack for it, I floundered and gave him a bag of peas wrapped up in a tea towel to do the job and vowed I should probably come up with a slightly [...]

We’re preparing to go on a car trip to Sydney in a few weeks for my husbands family’s annual picnic. Driving half way across the state with two kids who don’t deal with travelling AT ALL isn’t on the top of my list of fun things to do, so we always travel super prepared with everything we could possibly need to keep us all amused, and clean up the inevitable buckets of barf that come during any car trip that [...]

I love the way the crafting community on the internet takes an idea and just runs with it. One simple tutorial can evolve into so many different imaginings as each crafter gives their twist on an original idea. (And maybe I’m also a little biased on this one because it’s so exciting to find a sewing project for boys!) My Little Gems put up the original tutorial for this wonderful Car Caddy tutorial. Jamie from The Crafting Chicks added ric-rac [...]

Easter is coming, which means we all have an excuse to make bunny plushies to stuff into Easter baskets. Below are some of my favourite bunny patterns and tutorials for you to sew up. Wabbit by Yoonie – Great twist on the more traditional rabbits you’d find in Easter hampers, I can really see this softie becoming my son’s favourite very quickly. Chibi Bunny by My Little Mochi – Awesome details with the embroidery, and I really like the touch [...]

I love the look of covered buttons, but I don’t use them often enough to really justify buying a button covering tool. This is how I cover my buttons, it takes a little more time that the tool, but if you’re only doing them occasionally it saves you spending money on another crafting gadget. You’ll Need: Shank buttons in your chosen size (mine were from a button tin my Mum picked up for me from a garage sale, she’s magic [...]

Only a mild fail this week with a canvas that went wrong, making this week officially better than the previous one! I’ve been wanting to make up some silhouettes of the boys for a few months now, but I rarely visit the paper section of any craft stores and so kept on forgetting to pick up the black card. I’m super happy with how these came out, they only took about half an hour each, and I had a lot [...]

My lovely friend Shanni showed off her new camera strap the other day and I was instantly jealous. I have no idea why it had never occured to me to cover up the big chunk of black with “EOS” written all over it, so, inspired by Shanni’s purchase, I set about giving my camera strap a facelift. This is literally a tube of fabric, so it’s a great beginners project and it only took me about fifteen minutes, so perfect [...]

I make a lot of little bits and pieces that don’t tend to make it on to the blog, I’m not entirely sure why, particularly as some of my quickest and simplest tutorials (The Notebook Cover Tutorial and The Pincushion Tutorial) end up being the most popular, but this year I intend to bring an end to my unsung crafts that are hiding away and make a weekly post talking about what I’ve been creating over the week. I went [...]

My eldest son has just discovered “The Owl That Was Afraid Of The Dark” by Jill Tomlinson. It’s a wonderful book, and was one of my favourites growing up, but it has now lead to something of an Owl fixation and he’s asking for a softie. So I have scoured the internet high and low and give you five of my favourite free (try saying that after a few wines!) owl sewing patterns. LollyChops has a very vintage inspired owl [...]

Hi, I'm FernHi, I'm Fern and CraftBlog is my online home. I live in NSW with my husband and three sons, and spend every moment of my free time with my head buried in some form of creativity. In fact, I've never met a craft I didn't like, although I think I've tried a fair few that probably weren't too keen on me. Want to know more?
