I receive several emails a week asking if I accept guest posts on CraftBlog and if so what kind of content am I looking for, and what guidelines I have. Instead of writing it out repeatedly I figured the easiest thing to do was to have a page that everyone could refer to.
In response to the question, the answer is yes I do! Guest posts are awesome, they give me a little break from the posting schedule (*scoff*), lend a different voice to the site and at the same time direct traffic back to your own site.
Guest Post FAQs
Below are some of the questions emailed to me, hopefully this should cover anything you want to ask about guestposting on CB, if not, please feel free to contact me.
What kind of topics are you looking for?
Obviously it must be craft related, but within the realm of that you’re pretty much free to go crazy. My posts have a lean towards sewing, quilting and crochet, because that’s what I enjoy. You probably enjoy something different, so write about that! Whether it’s knitting, scrapbooking or Tibetan basket weaving – I can guarantee you that someone out there will want to read it.
Tutorials are best received in regards to feedback and traffic, but by no means does that mean that’s what you have to write. You may wish to review your local (Australian) craft market, discuss the creative process you go through to create a piece of artwork or talk about something controversial currently happening in the world of arts and crafts.
What guidelines do you have?
I’m not a grammar snob by any means, and I want all of the posts on craftblog to have a friendly conversational feel, but not at the detriment of grammar and spelling, I don’t look for perfection, but the post must be clear, easy to read and have a friendly tone.
Photos are not required for all posts, excluding tutorials, but if you do use any images please only use ones that you have permission to publish, so as your own or those listed under an appropriate creative commons license. Images must be of a good quality, once again, they don’t have to be perfect, but in focus and correctly exposed and of a reasonable resultion (500×800 +) are a good start.
Your post will have an introduction written by me, stating who you are and a bit about your site (including a link). You’re also welcome to submit a byline of your own to feature at the bottom of your post, this can include up to two links directed to your own sites, so it’s great to promote your blog, website or shop.
By submitting the post you agree not to post it anywhere else, whether it’s on your own blog or as a guest post on another site.
It also goes without saying that the content must be your own, please do not plagiarise from other websites, it just isn’t cool.
As a rule I don’t generally do much editing on the post, but please be aware I may correct any spelling and grammar or edit for space. Please also be aware that your post may not be up immediately, depending on the posting schedule and current topics covered. I will however give you a date that it will be published so you can prepare for any influx of traffic on your site.
What software does CraftBlog run on?
CB runs on the open source software from WordPress.org. It’s super duper and I highly recomend either the self hosted version (.org) or the hosted version (.com) for anyone considering starting their own blog.
If you are familiar with WordPress I can create a contributor account for you, allowing you access to the backend of CraftBlog and the ability to put up the post and format it yourself, it will then scheduled to be published once I’ve approved it.
I’m not familiar with WordPress, can you help?
If you’re unfamiliar with WordPress I’m happy to accept your post via email with any photos attached. I’ll then schedule it to post it for you.
Awesome! How do I get started?
Send me an outline of your post (eg. Hi Fern, I have written a beginners tutorial on basic Tibetan basket weaving techniques and would like to know if you’re interested!) via the contact page and we can get things moving.
