Cate’s Bringing The Blanket Back

Cate Blanchett caused a stir last night when she turned up to the opening of Screen Worlds at ACMI wearing a traditional granny square blanket fashioned into a dress.

News.com.au had this to say:

OSCAR-winning actor Cate Blanchett has been nick-named Cate Blanket after stepping out in a colourful crochet patchwork dress to open Screen Worlds at ACMI in Melbourne yesterday.

The jury is still out on whether the style queen made an unusual red carpet fashion faux pas when she braved the cold wearing the doily-inspired shock frock by Australian label Romance Was Born.

Fashion commentator Melissa Hoyer said Blanchett was fearless when it came to fashion, but felt the one-shoulder patchwork dress looked more like a crocheted blanket.

“I have one of those old school granny rugs in my home,” Hoyer said.

“I just didn’t realise you could wear it.”

Being a fashion critic sounds like so much fun, you know the girls that delight in bitching about EVERYONE in high school behind their back, they become the fashion critics, they’re basically pre-qualified in douchebaggery.

I hate fashion critics, I have a soft spot for Cate and I love crochet, so as far as I’m concerned this dress is basically made of the win.

The designers behind the dress, Romance Was Born, had this to say:

THE designers behind Cate Blanchett’s crocheted blanket dress say they are unfazed the garment has been labelled an “old school granny rug”, conceding critics’ description was spot on.

“That’s exactly what it is,” said Luke Sales, one half of Sydney design duo, Romance Was Born.

“We cut it up and it was hand-crocheted by my mother, so how could we be offended?” he laughed.

With the advent of online market places it’s become a lot easier to sell your handmade crafts, gone are the days of sitting out in the rain on a sunday morning at a craft market hoping that the right person would come along and see your wares. Now you can create, take some photos, write a bit of blurb and for a small fee sell your wares whilst you’re sitting in your pyjamas watching reruns of “Friends”. I’m about to start a series of tips on selling your product online and I’m curious about the amount of readers we have on CraftBlog that do sell their stuff online… so if you feel so inclined (and I know everyone likes ticking boxes) then I would love it if you could complete the sentence below so I can get a better idea of what you as readers would actually like to see

Hot Or Not? – Multifunction Scissors

This morning whilst wandering around the Lincraft website (yay for vouchers!) I stumbled on these, multifunction scissors. The blue ones include a retractable craft knife in one of the blades, the red ones include a tapemeasure snuck into the handles. I’m very torn on these, part of me is thinking that it’s an awesome multitasker that would make the folks over at Unclutterer proud, the other part of me thinks that, as someone who is notorious for forgetting where I put something down, this is a gaurenteed way to lose both of my most used crafting tools in one go. I remain undecided.

So, give me your thoughts…
