Last night I had a moment of insanity and hacked off five inches from the bottom of my hair – and I wonder why my husband tends to hide all the sharp objects.

With my new (not so) fabulous haircut, I’ve been thinking of all the pretty things I could put into my locks to beautify them, below is a round up of my favourite hair accessory tutorials that the interwebs have to offer!

  1. Button Hair Ties from Katie – I know I have a large collection of big beautiful buttons that I’ve picked up in op shops and yet still haven’t had a project to use them on, this would be a great way to showcase buttons, and if you do find that perfect project, easy to pull apart and still use the button.
  2. Covered button bobby pins from Cheryl – Love this classic look, and if you don’t have a button covering tool, you can use the cheater’s covered button method that I posted earlier in the week.
  3. Headband from Heather – Heather Bailey’s headband tutorial is one of the definitive ones out there, I’ve made several now and it’s a fabulous pattern. It’s also quick enough that you can whip one up to match an outfit before going out for the night.
  4. Seed beaded bobby pins from Kimberly – too fiddly for an ADHD crafter like myself, but I love how cute these look. The dragonfly is my favourite.
  5. Pinwheel bobby pin from Jenny – I love this! Pinwheels make me think of summertime, the beach and candy floss (or fairy floss as they call it over here), this clip would be fabulous in the summer, but also a great way to brighten up your outfit during wintertime and hark back to sunnier days.
  6. Braided headband from Ingrid – Ingrid actually emailed me her tutorial yesterday and partially inspired the round up. I love this simple look on little girls, and Ingrid’s daughter looks very pleased with her new headband!
  7. Bow hair clip from Abbie – You can’t go past dainty bows on little girls, or big girls for that matter, I’ve been known to rock the occasional bow in my time. Abbie has a great beginners tutorial for anyone starting to make their own bow clips.
  8. Fabric scrap hair clips from Sonja- I’m generally pretty good when it comes to scraps, once it gets down to anything smaller than 2x2inches, I throw it out, I’m completely regretting that now after seeing these awesome hairclips, with just some fusible web and a couple of minutes you can be wearing your favourite fabrics in your hair, this would also be really easy to adapt to a hair tie as well, or decorate a store bought headband with a few of the flowers.
  9. Beaded clips from Cathy – These simple beaded clips can dress up your hair in no time, and are both cheap and simple to make (my favourite kind of project!)
  10. Flower hair clips from Refabulous – These look like the fascinators you get in Myer and DJs around race season, but much cheaper and you won’t bump into someone wearing the same headpiece as you. Just be careful when you’re playing with fire and sealing the edges though.

Do you accessorise your hair much? It’s something I always mean to do, but it generally just gets scraped back into a ponytail and forgotten about. I’m hoping some of these tutorials will encourage me to prettify it a little more :)

Hi, I'm FernHi, I'm Fern and CraftBlog is my online home. I live in NSW with my husband and three sons, and spend every moment of my free time with my head buried in some form of creativity. In fact, I've never met a craft I didn't like, although I think I've tried a fair few that probably weren't too keen on me. Want to know more?
