A Modern Christmas Tutorial Round Up
Thursday, December 3, 2009 10:07Christmas is that time of the year where I firmly subscribe to the “more is more” theory. You can never have enough glitter, sparkles and fake snow as far as I’m concerned, but I lean far more towards fresh bright colours than the traditional reds and greens, and with this in mind I’ve created a round up of my favourite tutorials for modern Christmas decorations.
All of them are fairly low cost and are easy enough that you can whip them up way before the 25th!
See the full list after the jump ->
This little Partridge from RetroMama is adorable, the touch of novelty yarn for his feather is just fabulous. It could also be a great opportunity to introduce your child to the basic blanket stitch, it’s small enough to hold their focus for long enough to see a finished product.
This Paper Wreath (note to self, stop typing “wrath”, it’s no where near as festive!) from Sydney based crafter Lisa of The Red Thread holds so many options. You can make it with traditional colours with red and green wrapping or scrapbooking paper or get some bright blues and purples for a springtime feel.
This felt ornament from Zakka Life is my favourite kind of project, it looks far more intricate than it really is. With a few felt circles and some well placed stitches you can create this beautiful ornament in no time flat.

Stockings are a huge part of our Christmas, I have fond memories of sitting on my eldest sister’s bed early on Christmas morning whilst the four of us dig deep into our stockings, eating all the sweets and swapping the contents with each other. These Funky Christmas Stockings from Full Of Fluff have a downloadable pattern and would be easy to customise for every member of the family.
The simplicity of these Icicle Decorations from Bella Dia is amazing. Tin foil, white glue and plenty of glitter is all it takes to add a frosty feel to your tree. It’s an excellent Christmas craft for kids and they’re so cheap to make you can cover an entire tree in them for just a few dollars.
These Denim Christmas Trees from One Crafty Mumma (another fellow Aussie!) would look awesome in a range of denim colours from recycled jeans and denim skirts, I could also see them working really well in a minicord. The buttons and supercute polkadot ribbon are such a sweet touch.
With some Cardstock and a little more patience than I currently possess, you can make these super cute Snowflake Decorations from SimplyModernMom. They’d look awesome hanging down at various heights from a window.
These beautiful Felt Trees from Felt-o-rama are what started my search for funky Christmas tutorials. Sequins and bright colours fall pretty much straight into my Christmas aesthetic, and just the picture makes me so happy to look at it. Follow the simple tutorial and you can have your own felt trees decorating your mantle… or shelf… or desk… in fact I think I might make a little felt forest!
I tried to get through a round-up post without a Martha link, but I couldn’t resist this Button Wreath. If you’re not too keen on the idea of using up your entire green button stash in one project, never fear! The buttons are only held together with wire, so come January, if you choose, you can easily snip that and simply slide them all off ready for use.
Design*Sponge posted these great Paper Ornaments, once again, they’re very simple to make, low cost and are easy to customise to fit any decorating colour scheme.
How do you like to decorate for Christmas? Is more really less or do you go for the glitter covered home for a month like I do?
Have you spotted or written up any great Christmas tutorials? Let me know so I can feature them on an upcoming post.

That partridge is adorable! I’m going to have to file that one away and add it (and the wreath) to my ever-growing To Craft list. Thanks for the links!

That partridge is too cute for words… I think my Christmas tree is going to be partridge filled this year.
