Declan's finished quilt

I’m crazy happy about finishing this little beauty up over the weekend. I ended up taking the time to hand sew the binding and it was very much worth the effort, it’s far more precise than I could have ever managed on my machine and some hand sewing in front of some movies (Welcome To The Jungle and Terminator Salvation for those that are interested!) was very relaxing.

Wonky Log Cabin Front

I promise the edges are straight, it’s just my husband that is wonky in the picture. The front in total has 438 pieces, and the back has 72, including a label sewn into the back piecing with Declan’s name and the year on it.

Wonky Log Cabin Back

Massive amounts of inspiration was drawn from CrazyMomQuilts, RedPepperQuilts and the Fresh Modern Quilting Group on Flickr. I can only dream of being as talented as them!

BindingIt turned out that I didn’t have enough plain blue in any colour to bind with so I ended up cutting into this print from Camelot Cottons. Not an issue at all, but it now means I have to find a similar print to bind the red and yellow version I’m making for my other son, whilst keeping to the rules of stash only. I think I’ve finally decided on an awesome Kaffe Fasset print that’s been tucked away at the back of my bins because I liked it too much to cut into it.

This was also my first time washing a finished quilt before binding, I love the technique and it’s definitely something I’ll do again to get that super wrinkly quilt look combined with having perfect binding.

Half way through making this I was insisting I would never look at another log cabin block again, yet already I’m getting my scraps together to get started on Connor’s version.

Your quilt is great – I love the colors! I’m planning on doing the quilt in a week tutorial next month after I get the fabrics – I want to use your color scheme – it’s so fresh and fun!

I’m attempting to quit smoking and work in a drug rehab. 90% of the people here smoke and I work very long hours. Need busywork to keep my hands busy in lieu of smoking. Suggestions, please?
