Less than a day before the “Casting Off Ceremony” vandals have destroyed the installation piece of knitting covering the side of an entire bridge in Melbourne’s west.
From the ABC News:
The festival’s director, Karen Hadfield, says the giant knitting was hacked down and is now hanging from the bridge.
“We’ve had a few knitters down and there’s been a few tears from them because they’ve really put their heart and souls into it,” she said.
“We were going to have a big celebration tonight, a casting off celebration to celebrate their work.”
The artwork was part of the Big West Festival, you can read more about it at their Big Knit page and see pictures of their progress up until this point at The Big Knit Blog.
It saddens me that someone can come along and within a matter of minutes destroy what represents a month of hard work for so many people. It’s just so senseless. I can’t imagine the sense of disappointment that the knitters that put their hearts into this project must be feeling.
The ceremony will still be going ahead at 6pm at Footscray’s Stockbridge for anyone in Melbourne looking to show their support.

I am so sorry to see this story. All the love and hard work you put into it. God has a way of taking care of things in his own way.
Sincerely,
Theresa K. from PA
That is heart breaking! Was it destroyed before even being unveiled? That’s just a horrible thing to do to anyone.
Such a shame! Unfortunately not surprising though. Sad that a disrespectful minority so often vandalise in our communities.
