Easy Bunting Tutorial

Bunting!

I few yards of fabric, a rotary cutter and some bulky yarn was all it took to add this little splash of colour to my eldest son’s bedroom.

It’s super simple to make:

  • Cut a strip of fabric the height of triangle you want, stack your fabrics as many as you think your rotary cutter can get through easily in one swipe.
  • Cut triangles at a 22.5 degree angle along the strips
  • Finish the edges with pinking shears (or, even better, just use a pinking blade in your cutter in the first place!)
  • Place your bulky yarn (or ribbon) on right side of each triangle, at the top, run a stitch along the yarn (I used zig zig, but this isn’t necessary if you’re using ribbon). Backstitch at the beginning and end of each flag.
  • Pull through some yarn using the edge of your sewing machine as a guide (once the end of the previous flag hits the end of the bed it’s time to put another one under the foot) and continue to sew each triangle until you’ve completed your desired length.
  • Once it’s completed trim the thread between each triangle, taking care not to snip the yarn.
  • Iron them better than I did before putting them up – I’m hoping the creases will fall out in time, there is no way I’m dragging my pregnant butt up onto a chair for another hour to take them down and put them back up again just because of some wrinkles!

I used heavier weight decorators fabric from Ikea, if you’re using regular cotton you may want to add some fusible stabilizer to the strips before cutting them to add more weight to the flags.

Also worth noting is that with this cutting method every other triangle will be inverted, so if you’re using a directional fabric you may want to fussy cut. You can see that two of the green hippo flags in the picture are upside down, I don’t think it makes a huge difference, but it will depend on your preference and the fabric you chose.
